AFPPD was formed in 1981 at the Asian Conference of Parliamentarians on Population and Development held in Beijing. AFPPD membership and programmes have increased multi-fold since then. AFPPD currently has twenty-two National Committees and has full-time office support in several countries.

These themes are part of the eight MDGs, which aim to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; empower women and promote gender equality; reduce the mortality of children under five years old; improve maternal health; reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and create a global partnership for development.
